Bernardsville New Jersey Unveils Charming Mural of Historic Borough

Community comes together to make Bernardsville New Jersey more beautiful

BERNARDSVILLE, NEW JERSEY, UNITED STATES, April 30, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — Bernardsville, New Jersey is pleased to announce the completion of the Bernardsville Mount Airy Road Mural Project, with an unveiling of a new and long-anticipated mural depicting the historic borough. The mural is a permanent installation and attraction that covers both sides of the bridge on Mount Airy Road, a main thruway for downtown Bernardsville. The mural reads “Welcome to Bernardsville” on one side of the bridge, and on the other side: “Small Town, Big Community”. The unveiling is on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, free and open for the public to drive or walk by, or attend virtually (more details at https://downtownbernardsville.org).

The Mount Airy Road Mural Project is a collaborative project with the Borough of Bernardsville, the Somerset Hills School District, and Downtown Bernardsville. It is made possible by funds from community donations, sponsorships, and two grants (in 2020 and 2021) from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission totaling $8,500 through the Commission’s Local Arts Program Grant. Sherwin Williams donated all of the paint and materials. Additional sponsors of the mural are Melilo Equities, Wavelength Audio Video, Gary’s Wine & Marketplace, Jersey Central Power & Light, Advance Realty, Bernardsville Print Center, Borough of Bernardsville, and notable donations from Greg and Mary Jane Canose, Jack and Bonnie Frost, and Diane Greenfield.

To date, approximately $20,000 in funds have been raised of the total $25,000 goal. Additional donations are needed and may be made online here.

The mural was designed by renowned artist, Caren Frost Olmsted. Olmsted involved the Bernardsville community in the creation and painting of the mural, a process that began in October 2019. Olmsted provided guidance to Bernardsville residents of all ages as they painted the mural together in carefully planned sessions in the Bernardsville Train Station over the past several months. Olmsted, a Bernards High graduate, is also the artist of the mural on the Bernardsville Cinema.

“We are thrilled to finally install and celebrate this beautiful mural of Bernardsville,” said Mayor of the Borough of Bernardsville, Mary Jane Canose. “Installation was delayed by a year due to the pandemic, but creative measures were taken to bring it to fruition this year. Bernardsville has never done a beautification project of this scale before. We plan to do more. We want to thank the community, our sponsors and artist Caren Frost Olmsted,” added Mayor Canose.

Saturday evening’s call to post marks the running the 147th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, and for the first time in decades all of the horses will be running without Lasix, a diuretic that’s been rampantly misused as a performance-enhancing drug in racing since the 1980’s. Reformers in the industry successfully achieved the ban on Lasix at the Derby through the adoption of Kentucky state regulations that came just prior to Congressional enactment of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA). Animal Wellness Action’s (AWA) leaders worked on that legislation for six years and when AWA formed, we made it a top priority. Then President Trump signed the measure into law in late December – the first new federal horse protection since the enactment of the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act in 1971.

HISA relied on a coalition of animal advocates and horse racing industry reforms. It would not have been secured without industry buy-in and leadership from The Jockey Club, Water, Hay, Oats Alliance (WHOA), The Breeders’ Cup, Keeneland, the New York Racing Association (NYRA), and others. That coalition prompted Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and their House counterparts, Reps. Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., (who represents Saratoga, home to one of the oldest tracks in the U.S.), and Andy Barr, R-Ky., (who represents Lexington – the “Horse Capital of the World”).

The new legislation won’t take effect until mid-2022, and there’s much work to do to make sure the anti-doping standards are honored and, once the measure takes full legal effect, that it’s enforced. In the meantime, horses are still dying on tracks across America – nearly 100 so far this year.

The issue has been elevated this week by reporting from USA Today and the Louisville Courier Journal, in a story titled “'It's so easy to cheat': Is horse racing finally getting serious about drug misuse?"

There’s already a backlash among horse industry players who are addicted to doping. Some players, led by rogue horse trainers, as well as Oklahoma tracks and its state Attorney General are suing to invalidate the law. Some of the truly substandard tracks in the U.S. simply cannot fathom a future without doping, since they see horses as little more than commodities on the hoof. If they don’t perform well, what’s the point?
We are confident that the federal courts will uphold the law.

But in the meantime, our corporate engagement arm – The Center for a Humane Economy – is keeping our hands on the reins and driving the conversation on the issue in the private for-profit sector. This year we’ve been focused on shining light on the 10 horses who died on one of the most dangerous tracks in the U.S., in Charles Town, West Virginia, operated by the publicly traded Penn National Gaming Inc. The Associated Press spotlighted the first deaths in February, and WDVM in the greater D.C., Virginia, Maryland metro area joined us in unveiling an expose on Charles Town last month.

You see, it’s not just doping that’s at issue in U.S. horseracing – horse slaughter, and the archaic use of the whip must be addressed as well. The betting public will no longer tolerate the abuse of these horses. This isn’t ancient Rome, with games at the Colosseum and Circus Maximus; it’s 2021, and the Charles Town track has become well known for its harsh and unforgiving treatment of horses. We’re pressing Penn National that operates Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, to turn this ship around or shut down. Penn National must improve its track surfaces, implement a ban on whipping, and enact new policies that protect American racehorses from ending up dead on the track or consigned to the slaughter pipeline to be served up on foreign dinner plates.

While the call to post is sounded this weekend, we hope you’ll join us in the call to action and sign our petition asking them to support the reforms outlined above. Horses are at the center of their business, and they should not be an afterthought when it comes to their health, safety, and welfare.

Award-winning Washington, D.C. author, publisher and travel photographer has just published a hilarious book of "New Yorker Style' cartoons, and picked his favorite cartoon to grace the cover of the book. The cartoon is of two green aliens and their black dog planning to 'summer' on the popular island.

"McGuire's cartoons are too funny and edgy for The New Yorker Magazine," says Scott Sklar a George Washington University Professor who was raised in New York City, "hence the name of the book. Most magazine cartoons are 'gag' cartoons with a simple punch-line, whereas McGuire's have overlapping layers of humor. The cartoon gracing the cover of this new book, for example, contains five different funny elements, especially for those who 'get' the black dog reference."

This book is an East Coast edition and a West Coast version will be out shortly!

McGuire, who comes from a family of artists and architects, currently has 12 coffee table books in print but decided to expand into cartoons. "Many magazine cartoons are a bit sophomoric," says McGuire, "So I like to weave in complexity by including current references to food, wine, travel, science, medicine, and cultural news, as well as notables like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Lady Gaga and George Clooney. "In fact, he says, "spell check doesn't always catch super modern words like bitcoin, blockchain, and dogecoin."

"I love drawing aliens because, people are hard to draw and talking aliens are a juxtaposition between reality and non-reality adding more humor. My second favorite cartoon, perfect for all the Catholics in New York and New England who were whacked by nuns with rulers, show nuns with rulers at a stand-off with menacing looking aliens."

McGuire points out an expression in the cartoon world, "It is not the ink, it is the think," meaning no matter how well drawn the cartoon is, it needs to be funny! "And," he says, "cartoons by nature are caricatures, so the drawing can be wildly out-side-the-box as long as they represent the characters."

This East Coast Edition weaves in Eastern Seaboard references like New England prep schools, Martha's Vineyard, Central Park, Cape Cod & clam chowder. The West Coast Edition does the same for Hollywood, Napa Valley and the French Laundry.

Now, see if you can spot the typo, caused by predictive text and not caught by spell-check. In the book's introduction McGuire explains why he doesn't do political cartoons: "I don’t produce political cartoons as most politicians, like the late Donald Trump, create their own outsized caricatures by their own sheer buffoonery."

It has gone to press so I can't change it," says McGuire, "Besides Trump is still 'late' for anything noble: civility, dignity, grace, honor, kindness, etc."
